Building Stronger Numeracy Foundations in Adult Education with EMPower Plus

Nearly two years into the High School Equivalency tests – and less than two years away from new, more rigorous College and Career Readiness-aligned NRS tests such as TABE and CASAS – it is clear the need for stronger numeracy foundations in adult education is greater than ever. Numeracy instruction for college and career success requires delving beyond rote procedures and the steps needed simply to solve problems on test day. Our adult learners need a solid foundation steeped in conceptual understanding, procedural fluency and application in order to successfully navigate the math required for HSE tests, postsecondary mathematics, and beyond.

McGraw-Hill Education and TERC are excited to present EMPower Plus – an update of three of the original EMPower titles – designed to meet the challenges posed by more rigorous standards and tests by helping students build a strong foundation for algebraic thinking through number and operation sense. These updated titles emphasize the development of reasoning and operation sense, identifying patterns and formulating generalizations, and using benchmark numbers for making mental calculations – key foundational skills needed for success on HSE tests, for higher education, and for the workplace.

During this 60-minute webinar, we will explore the importance of conceptual understanding as developed using the EMPower Plus and EMPower series, focusing on:

  • Instructional shifts needed in order to achieve true college and career
  • How EMPower and EMPower Plus promote conceptual understanding through open-ended investigations and community building
  • Strategies for implementing EMPower Plus in your classroom – including hybrid strategies using adaptive math programs such as ALEKS®
