Hi {{lead.First Name:default=Educator}}!

Long-term literacy success begins with strong foundational skills, and Wonders is designed to provide just that!

Phonics and Word Work instruction deliver systematic and sequenced learning pathways to develop students’ foundational skills all while teaching kids to become fluent readers and writers. Better yet, Wonders is grounded in evidence-based practices and research-aligned learning activities.

Let’s take students on a meaningful journey through literacy together! In this email, we discuss key features of Wonders and associated research that supports foundational literacy skill building.

Routines establish solid learning patterns

Routines reflect best classroom practices and help students focus on the new learning task, rather than learning a new way to do something. In fact, routines are a powerful and proven way to improve learning since once processes are routinized, students expend less cognitive energy on the process so they can focus more on real learning.

Your Instructional Routines Handbook provides step-by-step guides to key instructional practices embedded in the Wonders program and the research behind them. Find it here: Resources > Resource Library > Teacher Resources > Instructional Routines

Some of the routines you’ll encounter include:

  • Close Reading Routine - find text evidence, respond to text, and use the notion of retelling to build students’ reading skills
  • Fluency Routine - support kids with reading accuracy, rate, and expression using strategies including modeling, guided practice, and partner work

Embedded author & expert tips enhance instruction

You’ll find author tips incorporated throughout ayour Teacher’s Edition, which provide insights on key topics covered in that lesson and the important role they play in student learning outcomes. Some of the topics you’ll find tips on include:

  • Gradual Release of Responsibility with Douglas Fisher
  • ELL Support with Jana Echevarria
  • Text Complexity with Timothy Shanahan

Find it here: Resources > Resource Library > Teacher Resources > Teacher Editions OR your print copy

In addition, you can access author & coach videos that offer a detailed perspective on topics such as applying foundational skills to reading and the importance of focusing on foundational skills instruction. Find it here: Resources > Professional Development > Author & Coach Videos Tab
