I was an English teacher for over twenty years. I marked literally thousands of GCSE and A-level exams and recall many staff meetings where we would scratch our heads about how to help our students to be better at spelling. A whopping 16 marks out of 40 in each GCSE language paper are for SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar). Yet somehow, very clever students can be very poor spellers. What were we getting wrong, we would ask ourselves? Why hadn’t all those primary school word lists and spelling tests helped our students when it came to their writing?
It’s about working memory:
What I have come to understand, since working at McGraw Hill (and having the privilege to attend all manner of interesting events focused on the science of learning), is that the brain has a limited capacity for working memory. If spelling hasn't become sufficiently automatic, it continues to place demands on working memory. That leaves fewer cognitive resources available for everything else a student is trying to do – choosing vocabulary, structuring a sentence, punctuating it and shaping an idea. Something has to give – that thing is often the spelling. When we talk about mastery learning, what we really mean is learning that skill to a level of automaticity so that your working memory does not have to get involved in the recall of knowledge. If you know how to spell ‘vivacious’ well enough, you can use it in your writing without a moment’s hesitation and you can spend your energy working out how to punctuate and craft your sentence.
What the research – and the government – tells us
The Department for Education's Writing Framework is clear on the importance of explicit, systematic instruction. It states: "Pupils should be taught to spell correctly through a structured and systematic approach, building on their phonics knowledge and developing their understanding of word patterns, morphology and etymology."
This aligns perfectly with the philosophy underpinning Spelling Mastery. The programme doesn't leave spelling to chance or hope that children will absorb it through reading alone. Instead, it delivers direct, cumulative instruction that builds knowledge step by step – exactly what the Framework advocates.
What Is Spelling Mastery International Edition?
Spelling Mastery is a Direct Instruction programme which has been used to great effect for several decades in classrooms across the world. It has now been adapted to British English spelling conventions for schools in the UK and internationally. It is designed for students in Years 1–6 and covers:
- Phonemic strategies – sound-symbol relationships
- Morphographic strategies – prefixes, suffixes, and root words
- Whole-word strategies – high-frequency irregular words
The International Edition ensures that British spellings (e.g. colour, behaviour, programme, recognise) are embedded throughout, making it immediately relevant and classroom-ready for UK teachers.
Why it works: The Direct Instruction difference
Unlike incidental or discovery-based approaches, Spelling Mastery uses scripted lessons that are:
- Fast-paced – lessons are daily and take 15–20 minutes
- Highly structured – reducing cognitive load for both teacher and student
- Cumulative – each lesson builds on the last, reinforcing retention
- Evidence-based – decades of research support its effectiveness
The Writing Framework emphasises that "effective teaching of writing requires pupils to develop automaticity in transcription skills so that cognitive resources can be directed towards composition." Spelling Mastery does precisely this – by making spelling automatic, it frees pupils to focus on the craft of writing itself.
Consistency across the schools
For literacy leads managing consistency across the school or the trust, Spelling Mastery offers:
- A unified approach to spelling across all year groups
- Built-in assessment to identify gaps and track progress
- Low teacher preparation time
- Scripted lessons leading to less planning burden
We're right beside you
Spelling matters – and the Writing Framework makes that clear. The evidence behind Spelling Mastery backs it up: measurable progress, lasting results, and students who genuinely learn to spell.
But knowing the research is just the starting point. Putting it into practice, in your classroom, with your students – that's where we come in. From training to ongoing support, we're with you every step of the way.
You don't have to figure this out alone. We're right beside you.
